Recommendation
Build the dependable bedtime-to-bathroom routine first. Help someone stop entertainment use before bed, wake at their chosen time, and complete a short physical action without waking the household unnecessarily or getting trapped by a broken scanner. Make the schedule adjustable, the enforcement understandable, and the morning interface calm.
The reviews support those needs. They do not establish a vacant category: SuperAlarm already has toothbrush scanning; Alarmy already supports iOS 26 system alarms; Wayk already combines mission alarms and app locking; Opal and Brainrot already provide bedtime/morning blocking. Compete on a routine people can trust and keep using, rather than the novelty of combining familiar features.
The initial customer hypothesis is a chronic snoozer whose late-night scrolling makes mornings worse, especially someone already using a mission alarm or blocker. Shift workers present a meaningful further opportunity, but accommodating every rotating schedule and producing circadian advice would substantially broaden the first release.
What was collected, and what the conclusions mean
This is not all global reviews. Public Apple feeds were queried across ten storefronts using recent/helpful sorts, with deduplication; Google Play used paginated English-requested, US-context streams. Apple feed limits, empty responses, regional selection and Android stopping conditions constrain coverage. Exact final counts, dates and stop reasons are in coverage.md and coverage.json; METHOD.md explains acquisition and reuse.
The final archive contains 90,646 unique written reviews: 2,115 iOS and 88,531 Android.

Alarmy's Android collection stopped at a five-minute extension limit with more available; a continuation cursor is saved. The other Android streams exhausted the queried English-requested/US context. No matching Android publisher app was verified for Pillow or Smolworks Brainrot. Alarmy dominates the archive, so findings are assessed by app/platform rather than pooled into market percentages.
Collection is not the same as close analysis of every review. The iOS synthesis closely examined 43 anchor reviews after exploratory reading across all seven apps. Android analysis selected substantive praise, complaints and requests across ratings and topics. Twenty external user-discussion/storefront pages supplied context, with current vendor documentation checked separately. The full collected text remains searchable for further questions.
These are self-selected reports, not reproduced bugs or representative percentages. A five-star review can contain a severe failure; a one-star review can acknowledge useful behavior. No complaint prevalence, medical efficacy or willingness-to-pay estimate is inferred. Android-specific failures are not attributed to iOS. Developer responses establish acknowledgment or claimed fixes, not independent proof of resolution. Evidence IDs below resolve to archived records; public feeds can change.
Alarmydemanding missions work; trust is fragile
Match: physical missions, adjustable difficulty/snoozing and effective sound choice. An iOS user says scanning an object elsewhere helped establish a schedule (14508023466, 2026-09-03). Android users also value the follow-up awake check enough to pay (5bcf6a63-fb83-4506-8be1-68040d7d0dda, 2026-06-16). The outcome is interrupting unconscious dismissal and returning to bed.
Improve: battery cost, intrusive morning screens, and recovery when the registered object is unavailable. A four-star iOS user reports effective waking alongside repeated reinstalls because of battery drain (14508514520, 2026-09-03); another requests an alternate dismissal while travelling without the barcode (13597351896, 2026-01-05; iOS evidence).
Current-feature check: Alarmy's official iOS announcement already promises lock-screen alarms and closed-background delivery on iOS 26 with version 25.45.0+. AlarmKit is table stakes, not our differentiation. Reliability must be demonstrated across the whole flow, including cancellation.
iOS anchors 6
Preserve configurable, physical wake-up missions and sound choice. Different users need different ways to stay awake. The strongest gaps are low-battery cost, a clean dismissal flow, and recovery when a chosen object is unavailable.

Waykmeaningful first actions beat arbitrary puzzles
Match: a mission that naturally starts the day. Making the bed keeps one reviewer from returning to it (13709606688, 2026-02-03). Improve: recognition that accepts valid actions and rejects shortcuts, a deliberate fallback, and quiet-during-mission preferences that remain saved. Reviewers report both wrong-object acceptance (14043262432, 2026-05-08) and sky/squat rejection without a usable recovery (14332655985, 2026-07-21). Archived iOS evidence and source feeds.
Concrete opening: nightly automation and clear app selection. A user likes Wayk but wants app locking to repeat each night and clearer blocked-versus-allowed terminology (14420891272, 2026-08-12). This directly contradicts a claim that Wayk is only an alarm. Its exact condition for releasing blocked apps was not verified.
Potential distinction, not demonstrated demand: Wayk's July 2026 privacy policy says some mission frames/audio go to an external AI provider. SleepingBeauty could offer locally verified missions, but the reviews do not establish privacy as a dominant purchase reason. Offline behavior still needs our own device verification.
iOS anchors 6
Preserve missions that create a real morning action, especially making the bed. Recognition must handle both wrong acceptance and failed acceptance. Nightly app locking already appears in user reports, so a combined blocker/alarm is not safe to call unique.

SuperAlarmtoothbrush scanning has direct customer evidence
Match: physical object missions, snooze controls, an understandable interface and responsive support. A Canadian reviewer specifically praises toothbrush scanning and fast developer help (14501371521, 2026-09-02).
Improve: clean termination and predictable interactions. Users report scanner/typed-sentence failures during repeated ringing (14216290259, 2026-06-23), a subscription screen preventing dismissal (14398591116, 2026-08-07), and redesigns changing familiar interactions at wake-up (14051683920, 2026-05-11). A separate user asks for a preview alarm for reassurance (13627300098, 2026-01-12). Source-linked iOS anchors.
Current-feature check: a December 2025 user already praised AlarmKit. Developer replies acknowledge some recognition defects and claim fixes for some cancelled-alarm problems; neither establishes the current failure rate. Our opportunity is dependable execution, a testable setup and recovery that does not require deleting the app.
iOS anchors 7
Preserve object missions, configurable snooze limits, and simple UI. Toothbrush scanning and AlarmKit are already reported here. Reliability includes stopping cleanly: cancellation, mission completion, and subscription state must never strand a ringing user.

Opalconfigurable friction is valuable; necessary access must survive
Match: automatic blocking, allowed apps and adjustable friction. A five-star reviewer values these controls for reducing late-night scrolling (14288719860, 2026-07-10).
Improve: dependable schedules, preserved exceptions and a middle ground between a trivial bypass and an absolute block. September reviewers describe missed limits and ask for stronger progressive waiting; another says navigation, audiobooks and a crochet counter now inflate their distraction metric (14486591141, 2026-08-29). iOS anchors. The June redesign discussion contains acknowledged migration bugs, claimed fixes and continuing user problems; do not assume every June issue remains today.
Current-feature check: Opal already has sleep/morning assistants, no-unblock rules, Emergency Pass, PIN and uninstall protections (official guide). The opening is understandable, reliable control—not inventing strict blocking. One paying user's request for fewer gems and metrics, 2026-02-14, also supports testing a simpler experience.
iOS anchors 6
Preserve automatic time-based blocking, allowed apps, and useful reports. Current complaints point to enforcement and navigation regressions, including removal of productive-app exclusions. Users differ on desired friction; a single strictness setting will not suit everyone.

Brainrotemotional feedback can interrupt habits
Match: timely intervention and personally meaningful feedback. Users credit attachment to the character and interruption messages with pausing before opening distracting apps. A six-month user requests personally written messages (14261588238, 2026-07-04).
Improve: selective, automatic enforcement and visible value before commitment. An iOS user reports schedules working only while Brainrot is open (14475698486, 2026-08-26); another objects to navigation/workout logging counting against them (14102857569, 2026-05-24), and another to lengthy onboarding before the paywall (14315822676, 2026-07-17). Full anchors.
Current-feature check: Smolworks' listing already includes bedtime/morning schedules and local blocking. Do not include unrelated Android Brainrot reviews. Optional personal off-phone reminders are a plausible SleepingBeauty feature; a guilt-inducing mascot or claims about “healing the brain” are not required by this evidence.
iOS anchors 6
Preserve emotionally legible feedback and timely interventions. The character can motivate users, but actual brain health is not established by these reviews. Opportunity lies in automatic, selective blocking and personally meaningful prompts rather than more decorative features.

Pillowusers want useful context, but uncertain data creates work
Match if we add tracking: understandable patterns, passive collection and optional audio context. A long-term reviewer values recordings, heart rate and trends (14497741312, 2026-09-01). Improve: transparent data quality and recovery. Other users report commuting/desk time classified as sleep (14416118611, 2026-08-11), missed short naps (14370040955, 2026-07-31) and inaccessible historical data (13876424261, 2026-03-22). iOS evidence.
Current-feature check: Pillow supports re-analysis and duration edits, but cannot reconstruct an entirely missing session without sensor data. Naps are supported, although short naps may not auto-detect. A newer July 2026 alarm guide permits recurring iOS 26 alarms; those presets omit Smart Wake Up, recordings and Sleep Aid. “No manual edits,” “no naps,” and “all alarms require nightly manual setup” would be misleading.
Decision: do not copy the tracking dashboard into the first release. It adds a substantial accuracy, synchronization and support commitment without proving our bedtime/wake intervention works.
iOS anchors 6

RISEtranslating data into action is the strength
Match: an understandable next step. Users value energy timing for planning demanding work (13638938537, 2026-01-15) and wind-down widgets/calendar integration (14185137274, 2026-06-15). Improve: fit advice around actual obligations. A night worker reports recommended sleep during a shift (14285402468, 2026-07-10); others want gradual movement toward a workable bedtime or varying weekday plans. iOS anchors.
Current-feature check: RISE already offers sleep-time edits and travel recalibration. Its irregular-hours guidance, May 2026, explicitly acknowledges that frequently rotating schedules make its Melatonin Window less reliable. This is a specific documented limitation, not proof RISE is useless for shift workers.
Decision: first support the times users must wake and the boundaries they choose. A sophisticated energy forecast is unnecessary to deliver that value.
iOS anchors 6

| Must match: supported customer expectation | Bet worth testing: not established competitive absence |

| Alarm rings, reschedules and cancels correctly | One simple setup that keeps bedtime and wake settings consistent |
| Physical mission works under real morning conditions | Locally processed toothbrush verification with an understandable recovery path |
| Blocks start/end automatically; essential apps remain available | Optional blocking until mission completion, rather than scheduled alarm time |
| Users choose useful friction and sound behavior | Calm morning flow with little unnecessary time on the phone |
| Clear commercial terms and uninterrupted dismissal | Brief personal reminders of what the user intended to do instead of scrolling |
| Schedule fits the user's week | Later: gradual bedtime changes constrained by real obligations |
The exact mission-completion unblock rule remains unknown across the seven, rather than a confirmed “none offer this.” Beyond the named set, vendors already market combined routines: Rizen offers wind-down blocking plus mission alarms, and Beyond Alarm describes Android blocking triggered after mission completion. These are vendor claims, not tested behavior, but they rule out confidently claiming broad category novelty.

| P0 / High | Separate successful scanning from fallback dismissal. Setup rehearses the real toothbrush. Validate both false acceptance and false rejection in representative bathrooms. A deliberate alternate path ends noise without deletion and records “fallback,” not “scan completed.” | RoutineStore.dismissWakeGate for .alarm currently completes without a scan. Retain an intentional recovery option while separating completion outcomes. |
| P0 / High | Make the block-release rule explicit. Show tonight's start/end, allowed apps and armed status. UI, documentation and actual extension behavior must agree; cancellations leave no stale shields or alarms. | intervalDidEnd clears shields at the scheduled alarm. Feature prose also describes release on scan: reconcile the promise with current behavior. |
| P0 / High | Protect the critical interaction. No paywall, ad or rating request can obstruct ringing, scanning or fallback. Configuration and permission problems appear before committing to the night. | Preserve the focused core flow as monetization and onboarding are added. |
| P1 / High | Make timing adjustable. Support an explicit lead time, weekday/weekend wake plans and a one-night override with a visible return to the usual schedule. Verify cross-midnight/timezone calculations. | The seven-hour lead and one daily wake time are fixed today. Label the interval as app blocking, not measured sleep need. |
| P1 / Medium-high | Respect the household and useful apps. Persist sound behavior during missions and explicit app exceptions; explain temporary access without silently changing future nights. | Existing app exceptions are a foundation. Assess sound settings against real waking effectiveness and disturbance. |
| P1 experiment / Medium | Test optional blocking until completion. Compare timed release with a chosen mission-based release; define emergency recovery and a maximum practical duration. Measure abandonment and fallback use as well as successful mornings. | Requires product/design changes beyond the current scheduled release. It is a hypothesis, not a novelty claim. |
| P1 / High | Record observable outcomes. Distinguish scheduled alarm, gate opened, scan success, fallback and self-reported return to bed. Offer a concise weekly reflection. | A scan demonstrates recognition, not brushing, staying awake or good sleep. Avoid unsupported sleep-stage or brain-health scores. |
Keep full sleep tracking, circadian forecasts, extensive mission catalogs and social gamification outside the first release unless user validation changes the priority.
What to validate next
- For current alarm-plus-blocker users, what still goes wrong: going to bed, hearing the alarm, leaving bed, or staying off the phone afterward? Which failure would justify switching?
- Does continuing the block until completion improve mornings enough to outweigh trapped-access concerns? Which essential apps and fallback rules are necessary?
- Can the actual toothbrush detector work quickly and consistently across different toothbrushes, low light and shared bathrooms, without accepting easy substitutes?
- Will target users pay after experiencing several successful nights, and what trial demonstrates the value without surprising them after setup?
- Do weekday/weekend plans cover the initial audience, or is rotating-shift support essential to the segment we choose?
Method, evidence and verification
iOS findings, Android findings, and external evidence/current-feature checks preserve fuller anchors, dates, caveats and source links. Raw review IDs support auditing even when public feeds change. Collection integrity checks are documented separately; no competitor behavior or SleepingBeauty device behavior was reproduced in this research pass. Product code was not changed.
Evaluator verdict: stop collecting. The synthesis is adequate for choosing the next product priorities within its stated limits. It is not sufficient to claim market prevalence, validated willingness to pay, clinical benefit, or a unique combined category. The next material evidence should come from real-device verification and interviews with current alarm-plus-blocker users, not another review scrape.
All 25 iOS review IDs cited in the report, all 43 iOS anchors and all 34 Android evidence IDs resolve to archived records. Collection validation passed with no errors.
